Synopsis: High pressure is controlling the area but there was some storm energy passing through the mid-levels of the atmosphere with a trough to the north and northwest of the viewing area that was stretched down to Central Texas. Some of that energy passed through South Texas last night and Saturday morning.
The cold front that passed through the region brought a lot of cool, dry air down from the north producing just some high clouds. The high-level clouds increased last (Friday night) night as some storm energy moved through the Crossroads, but due to limited moisture (below 700 mb/10,000 feet) after the frontal passage, there was very little if anything in the way of rain. The switch in winds to the northeast, combined with extra cloud cover, temperatures on Friday night were not as cold (mostly in the 40’s overnight) as Thursday night.
The high moved into the northern Gulf on Saturday, allowing for winds to shift from out of the east, pushing warm, moist, air up from the south and heating temperatures up into the 60’s and 70’s.
For the long-term period, the airflow out of the Gulf will continue on Sunday, allowing for significant moisture increases (1.5″) across the area. A trough along the coast could bring scattered showers along the coast and out over the open waters.
As high pressure pushes off to the east, the storm disturbances pushing through South Texas will pull on the high and that should spike up winds Monday into Tuesday.
As airflow returns from out of the Gulf (south) on Sunday, warm, moist air will move up and warm temperatures into the upper 70’s on Sunday, and upper 80’s to mid 90’s by Tuesday ahead of the next front. Low temperatures will stay in the 60’s during this time frame. The increased moisture along with the rain should keep temperatures in the low and mid 70’s on Wednesday.
After frontal passage, Thursday, Friday and Saturday’s high temperatures will only warm into the 50’s. Low temperatures will stay in the 30’s and 40’s with the possibility of a light freeze across the norther portion of the viewing area.
