Evolution is hardly predictable. But it works. And works so well, that this efficiency of evolving is often underestimated by a large part of scientific community.
Quick fact: in less than two weeks bacteria can evolve to resist antibiotics thousands of times stronger than what would have killed them at the start. Incredible, isn’t it? But how do we know such facts? The answer is simple: there are a type of experiments that simulate evolution using its down-scaled mechanisms that fit in an average-size lab. Thanks to these experiments we can discover genetic and epigenetic features never known to the mankind before.
In most situations, such experiments are strongly limited in time. This is natural because resources are not endless for all of us. But one of experiments, which is the longest-running evolution experiment in the world, has managed to persist for 33 years and is still going on strong.
