Intensifying hostilities in Ukraine following a wide-ranging attack by Russian forces Thursday, Feb. 23, has spurred dozens of organizations to appeal for donations to support those on the front lines or otherwise affected by the conflict.
While armed conflict in eastern Ukraine is not new, the Russian invasion threatens to disrupt the daily lives of children and families, leaving them in need of humanitarian assistance.
Here are some organizations soliciting donations for resources:
UNICEF USA
According to a UNICEF USA spokeswoman, the New York-based organization seeks $66.4 million to provide access to basic services in eastern Ukraine, including water and sanitation, immunization and health care, schooling and learning, psychosocial support, and emergency cash assistance for up to 7.5 million children.
Hostilities in Ukraine “post an immediate threat to the lives and wellbeing” to those children, Catherine M. Russell, UNICEF’s executive director, said in a release. “Unless the fighting subsides, tens of thousands of families could be forcibly displaced, dramatically escalating humanitarian needs.”

This week, the organization delivered 3,000 liters of potable water to Dokuchaevsk and sent 7,000 liters to Donetsk municipality.
In a statement Thursday, ICRC President Peter Maurer said the intensifying and spread of the conflict in Ukraine “risk a scale of death and destruction that are frightening to contemplate, given the immense military capacities involved.”
The ICRC provides assistance to help improve the living conditions of those displaced by armed conflict.
