The Miami Hurricanes, and the college football world at large, are closely monitoring Shemar Stewart’s recruiting process.
Stewart, a 5-star defensive line prospect from Florida, is among the top players in the Class of 2022. After watching their team fight through several inconsistent seasons of late, Hurricanes fans should be extremely excited about the latest news regarding the excellent pass-rusher.
Shemar Stewart has spent some time with Manny Diaz and the Miami Hurricanes
In the Miami Hurricanes’ ideal world, Shemar Stewart won’t leave South Florida to begin his college football career.
Although the top recruit has not officially visited the Hurricanes yet, he spent at several of their offseason prospect camps in June 2021. According to The Athletic, he spent the duration of a 7-on-7 camp on Sunday, June 13, speaking with Hurricanes defensive line coach Jess Simpson and other Miami staffers.
Stewart reportedly visited the Hurricanes on Tuesday, June 1.
As of June 2021, 247 Sports listed Stewart — a rising senior at Monsignor Edward Pace High School in Miami Gardens, Florida — as the state’s second-best prospect regardless of position. He is also considered the country’s No. 7 overall player.
The Athletic reported that the Hurricanes hope to host Stewart and another pass-rusher, Nyjalik Kelly of Dillard High in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, at some point in the fall. 247 Sports ranked Kelly, a 4-star recruit, as the 12th-best prospect in the state of Florida.
Stewart is among the Class of 2022’s highest-rated prospects
Listed at 6 feet 5 inches and 260 pounds, Stewart has the size and skill set to become a dynamic pass-rusher at the collegiate level.
MaxPreps credited Stewart with no sacks in two games during the 2020 season. However, he skyrocketed up prospect boards when he totaled 15 sacks in 10 games as a sophomore in 2019.
In a March 2021 scouting report, 247 Sports compared Stewart to Kansas City Chiefs edge rusher Chris Jones. Recruiting analyst Andrew Ivins even projected Stewart, a rising high school senior, will eventually be a first-round selection in the NFL draft.
“[Stewart’s] rare physical traits and elite testing numbers suggest that he could blossom into an all-conference type of player at a Power 5 program and eventually an early pick in the NFL Draft if everything comes together. Has a chance to remain [on the] edge, but [his] future might be as an interior pass rusher as his body is starting to trend that way.”

247 Sports listed Stewart as the country’s third-best defensive line prospect. Walter Nolen (St. Benedict at Auburndale High School in Cordova, Tennessee) and Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy (Lakeland, Florida) are the only players ranked above him.
What other schools are in the mix for Stewart?
The Miami Hurricanes aren’t the only team in hot pursuit of eventually signing Stewart.
According to 247 Sports, the top recruit also attended Clemson, LSU, and Ohio State camps in June. As of publication, he still held offers from all of those schools.
Although Stewart can verbally commit to a school at any point, such a pledge is non-binding until he signs a letter of intent. The 2021 Early Signing Period begins Wednesday, December 15, and ends two days later.
