Serge Aurier feels there is “something special” happening at Tottenham – but the Frenchman warned it is far too early to start talking about title challenges. Jose Mourinho’s team produced a tactical masterclass on Sunday to overcome Manchester City 2-0 and shoot to the top of the Premier League on goal difference ahead of champions Liverpool, on the back of a run of five wins in their last six matches.
Spurs now seem to have shrugged off their early season hiccups when they dropped points against teams like Newcastle and West Ham.
And 27-year-old Aurier, now in his fourth season at Tottenham, said: “The objective is to try to stay there for as long as possible.
“We are very happy about what is going on and our position because we deserve to be top of the table.
“And I can’t forget that we dropped some points stupidly at home against West Ham or Newcastle.
“It is too early to think about the title. We can’t rush anything. A couple of weeks ago Southampton were top, then it was Leicester. Now it is us.
“We want to be in the conversation – and we are. We have big games coming up and we want more results like against City.”
Spurs face Ludogorets in the Europa League at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium tomorrow (Thursday) night, knowing a win would put them firmly in command of Group J.
Aurier said: “I can feel there is something special happening here. I am not a dreamer; I take things as they happen.
“We are all on the same page. We work together, we win together – one day we will lose together, but we will have to stay united.
“I want to win the next match and go to every game with the players believing and organised in a way that we can beat that opponent.
“We are a process. This team is a process in place. Good signs of evolution at every level. We are very happy with that of course but I don’t care too much about the table.”
He added: “I’m happy with the evolution. I knew, I think I knew where I could improve the team. We worked hard, the players are very open to what we are doing.
“I couldn’t be more pleased but this position can be fake. Tomorrow we can be second and you lose two matches and we could be mid-table. Incredible, incredible Premier League.”
