TRIBUTES have been paid to Oswestry Cricket Club legend Dave Vart who passed away last week.
The former Oswestry opening bowler and stalwart learnt his cricket in the North East before playing London club cricket after graduating from university. He joined Oswestry in 1987 and made an immediate impact in the Shropshire League, going on to represent the county in the late 1980s.
He appeared for the county over-50 side and played at Morda Road for over 30 years. His son, Joe Carrasco, captained the county side in 2019.
In paying tribute, county chairman John Hulme said: “Dave was a much loved and valued supporter of Shropshire cricket who in recent years had earned infinite praise as Oswestry groundsman in the staging of county matches at the club.
“He was an accomplished seam and swing bowler who was justly proud when son Joe followed in his footsteps and was selected for Shropshire before becoming only the second ever player from Oswestry to be appointed county captain.
“His contribution to grass roots cricket both on and off the field of play was immeasurable. He enjoyed a deep knowledge and insight into the game which he was always happy to share with young and old alike. His passion for sport, and cricket in particular, knew no bounds.
“Ever the jester, he amused and entertained so many over the years, be it on the field of play or from the boundary.
“Above all, Dave was an honest, kind and generous man, always respectful and mindful of the needs of others. He embodied the spirit of cricket and his life enriched us all.
“Our thoughts are very much with Blanche, Frances, Rhiannon and Joe at this particularly difficult time.”
