President Trump said Saturday that it’s a joke to suggest he has a Messiah complex — and any media reports saying he thinks otherwise are laughable.
Reporters covering his impromptu press conference last week “knew I was kidding, being sarcastic, and just having fun,” Trump tweeted, as he scolded the press for its coverage of his comment that he is the “chosen one” to end China’s unfair trade policies.
“The MANY reporters with me were smiling also,” he continued. “And yet when I saw the reporting, CNN, MSNBC and other Fake News outlets covered it as serious news & me thinking of myself as the Messiah. No more trust!”
Wednesday’s statement led to three days of blistering press coverage that portrayed Trump as having a “Messiah complex.”
The tweet was Trump’s second denial of that take, coming hours after he told reporters that the comment “was sarcasm. It was joking. We were all smiling.”
Trump followed the tweets with a post thanking French President Emmanuel Macron for hosting him for lunch on Saturday — but did so with a link to a parody Twitter account, not Macron’s own. He corrected the link 15 minutes later.
