Turkey Leg Hut’s new dress code explored
The restaurant’s Instagram post listed the dress code that customers of all ages would have to follow.
The main points in the code stated the following:
- No excessively revealing clothing (including distressed or ripped clothing)
- No house attire (such as wave caps, du-rags, house shoes, shower caps)
- No exposed undergarments (including sports bras, bras and panties)
- No swimwear of any kind
- No apparel sporting obscene language on it
- No baggy clothing
Explaining these rules even further, the company stated in the caption, “Please know that we are a family-friendly restaurant that serves all ages from children to adults daily and putting this dress code in place was necessary to ensure that all parties from our guests to our staff are dressed appropriately when in our establishment.”
The restaurant further stated, “We are not a club, we are a family-friendly restaurant and will continue to maintain our standards as we welcome everyone to the Turkey Leg Hut!.”
Naturally, Turkey Leg Hut’s dress code ruffled many feathers. But the owner was quick to defend it.
Why did owner Nakia Price implement the rules?
Many would already know that Turkey Leg Hut is a black-owned, Third Ward restaurant. Nakia is the co-owner of the spot along with her husband Lynn Price.
Over the years the spot has established itself as one of the top dining places famous for its smoked turkey legs and is looking to expand even further.
However, its latest dress code could become its fall from grace. The owner Nakia accompanied Friday’s announcement with an official statement released on Saturday.
She said in the statement, “At the Turkey Leg Hut, we do our best to accommodate all of our guests. It’s unfortunate that we even have to address this or implement a dress code but we are a family-friendly restaurant that serves all ages from children to adults.”
Divulging into the reason for the rules’ being implement, the owner revealed that they had received complaints from customers against the wardrobe choices of some other customers. She further said, “In order to try and ensure all guests are comfortable while visiting us, we were forced to put a new dress code policy in place.”
Although the owner did state that the new dress code wasn’t meant to offend anyone, many regular visitors and fans of the spot did take offence to it.

Twitter reacts to Houston restaurant’s changed rules
Twitter was abuzz with reactions as many swarmed to the platform to express their thoughts on the Turkey Leg Hut owner’s statement and the new dress code.
One user wrote, “Damn, Turkey Leg Hut really got that “racial profiling” starter pack for their dress code. But it looks like the owners live out in Katy so… not quite as surprising.”
Another user stated the rules were an “Absolute Mess.”
A third user said, “The owner looking mad judgemental like he doesn’t have a cornucopia of neck tattoos… How dare someone enjoy a turkey leg at turkey leg hut in a tank top.”
Many made light of the situation and turned the whole thing into a joke.
