Here are a few tips if you must be on the roadways
YOAKUM, Texas – On Tuesday, TxDOT crews began treating major roadways and fixed structures with brine. They also monitored areas already treated with brine. Brine is a mixture of water and sodium chloride. Although TxDOT treated areas with brine, this does not prevent ice from forming on the roads or bridges. You still have to use caution when driving, even if that area has been treated.
TxDOT will go into 24-hour operations and monitor roads, as long as it is safe to do so. The crews urge drivers to not go out during this winter weather and to avoid driving as much as possible. If you have to go out on the roadways, here are a few tips:
- Keep your windows clear so that you can see all around you.
- Do NOT use cruise control.
- Allow yourself extra time to get to your destination and do not be in a rush.
- Keep a safe traveling distance between you and the car in front of you.
- No distracted driving. Stay aware of your surroundings and be prepared to stop and slow down on short notice.
- Check your tire pressure and make sure your have fully operating windshield wipers.
- When traveling a long distance, make sure to have an emergency kit and extra supplies such as food, water, medications, and blankets, just in case you get caught in traffic or have to be in your car longer than expected.
Road conditions can change very quickly. Make sure you are prepared for those changes if you have to be on the roadways. Make sure to also check your local weather stations and visit www.Drivetexas.org for road conditions.
