UK weather forecast – Met Office warns cold blast to hit Britain and send temperatures plunging to 2C – The Sun

BRITAIN will be hit by a chilly blast to kick off Autumn, sending temperatures plunging in some areas to 2C.

The north will feel the icy chill the hardest with cold spells plunging temperatures to a notable drop from last week’s 33C Bank Holiday weekend.

A polar maritime air mass coming in from Iceland and the north west Atlantic will bring a noticeably cooler start to the week.

The Met Office said the polar chill will mark the start of Autumn, with the next couple of nights to be the coldest.

Meteorologist Craig Snell told Sun Online: “The weather is right on cue for the start of autumn this week and we are looking at a much cooler spell compared to the very hot conditions last week.

“While it will be fairly quiet we could see temperatures between 10C and 15C lower than during the heatwave, dipping into single figures in parts of the country.”

Averages of 17C are predicted in the north, with temperatures dropping to 2C and 4C over night time in some parts of Scotland.

Rain and 50mph gales are predicted to continue to see temperatures fall across Scotland on Wednesday.

And wet and windy conditions in the north west may be enough for a touch of frost.

Cloud and persistent rain will arrive over western Scotland and Northern Ireland.

It’s a drop in mercury of almost 15C in some parts of the country compared to last week.

However, Mr Snell says the cooler temps are around par for this time of year.

NORTH-SOUTH SPLIT

It’s a different story for the south of Britain where London and parts of the south east will see highs of 22C.

Mr Snell dubbed the divide a north/south split, describing conditions in the south as mostly dry and bright.

He explained: “A North-South split will see the bulk of the rain in the North, with 40–50 mph coastal gales in the North West on Wednesday, but with the South brighter and seeing 21C highs.”

But it’s good news for the end of the week with weather expected to warm across both regions.

Meanwhile, hurricane conditions are battering Florida and the Bahamas.
