Wall Street experienced a sharp reversal on November 20, 2025, erasing more than $2.7 trillion in market value as investors turned cautious over soaring valuations in technology stocks amid growing fears of an artificial intelligence (AI) bubble.

Despite a strong earnings report from Nvidia, which initially lifted markets, gains faded quickly, pushing major indexes lower. This backdrop of uneven market sentiment was compounded by mixed US employment data that muddled the Federal Reserve’s path on interest rates, further unsettling investors.

Tech sector selloff and market volatility

The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite closed down 2.2%, retreating from an intraday high after Nvidia’s impressive report showcasing $57 billion in quarterly revenue. Nvidia’s stock itself fell 3.2% by market close, highlighting persistent investor concerns about substantial AI-related capital spending and whether such elevated valuations are sustainable.

The S&P 500 dropped 1.6%, with 10 of its 11 sectors finishing lower, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 387 points (0.8%).

The day saw significant intraday swings, with the Nasdaq and Dow moving more than 1,000 points between their peaks and lows, marking the most substantial volatility since April.

Live Events

The Cboe Volatility Index (VIX), Wall Street’s “fear gauge,” surged 12% to 26 points, reflecting widespread investor nervousness about potential market declines and elevated uncertainty surrounding AI spending.

Employment data and Fed rate uncertainty

The latest US jobs report showed 119,000 new jobs added in September, well above the expected 50,000, but the unemployment rate ticked up to 4.4%, its highest in four years. The mixed signals could delay the Federal Reserve’s decision to cut interest rates at its December meeting, reinforcing cautious market behavior. Treasury yields softened, with the 10-year note yield dropping to about 4.1%, as fixed income markets digest the economic data.

Broader market themes and international effects

The tech selloff extended beyond the US, with Bitcoin falling 4.2% to about $86,337, its lowest level in seven days, reflecting broader risk aversion.

Meanwhile, the Japanese Nikkei 225 index rose 2.6%, attracting some of the displaced global capital, as investors sought safer havens amid the selloff. Consumer staples were one of the few sectors to gain, driven by Walmart shares, which surged over 6% after raising its annual sales forecast and preparing to switch its stock listing to the Nasdaq.

South Korea’s Kospi index also tumbled during initial hours, notably due to its tech-heavy composition and close ties to global semiconductor demand.

There are concerns over tech sector valuations driven by AI hype, with some describing the situation as a multi-trillion dollar tech bubble showing signs of strain. Interactive Brokers’ Steve Sosnick noted the fragility of market sentiment despite strong Nvidia earnings, suggesting a complex interplay of algorithmic trading and correlation between stocks and cryptocurrencies.

FAQs:

Q1: Why did markets reverse after Nvidia’s strong earnings?
Despite Nvidia’s surprisingly high revenue, investor concerns about overvaluation and large AI investments triggered profit-taking and algorithmic selling, resulting in a rapid market reversal.

Q2: How does the employment report impact the Federal Reserve’s policy?
Mixed data, strong job growth but rising unemployment, has made it harder for the Fed to justify immediate interest-rate cuts, adding to market uncertainty ahead of its December decisions.

Q3: What does the spike in the VIX index imply?
The 12% increase in the VIX indicates growing investor fear and expected market volatility, signaling caution in equity markets.

Q5: Is this the start of a broader tech market downturn?
While some describe the situation as an AI-driven bubble showing instability, analysts urge caution, emphasizing the possibility of short-term volatility before a potential longer-term recovery.
