The match remained even after the break until Kounde – who continues to be linked with Chelsea – lost control.
After Barcelona defender Jordi Alba had twice bumped him in the back as they argued over a throw in, Kounde grabbed the ball and launched it into Alba’s face from close range.
The referee did not hesitate to show him the 23-year-old defender a red card.
Despite playing with a man advantage, however, Xavi’s side could not find a breakthrough.
Their best chance to pick up all three points came when Dembele curled a shot off the far post with six minutes left.
