Wayne Lineker has shared a picture of himself staring at the ground in misery as he slammed the government’s decision not to green light Ibiza holidays.
The Celebs Go Dating star, 59, runs a number of bars and nightclubs both in mainland Spain and on the party island of Ibiza.
He recently returned to Ibiza to start working on reopening his nightclub empire, but he was dealt a blow yesterday when it was announced Spain and its islands would remain on the Amber travel list.
It means Brits are discouraged from travelling there for holidays, and anyone who does will face 10 days of quarantine at home and pay for a number of pricey Covid tests.
Yesterday’s announcement plunged Portugal from the Green onto the Amber list in a huge blow for holidaymakers while no new countries were added to the list of quarantine-free destinations.
In a lengthy post on Instagram, Wayne called the decision “wonky” and admitted he felt so “sorry” for anyone trying to book a sunshine getaway this summer.
He wrote: “Another wonky decision. Such devastation once again. Heartbreaking more for business owners and as much for the people that just want to jump on a plane and get away and have that holiday abroad you have all worked so hard for.
“That’s what I miss more than anything else . Seeing people happy laughing drinking in the sunshine listening and dancing to music.
“I’m so sorry for you all…”
However, Wayne remains optimistic that things will change and the Spanish island will soon be granted Green list status.
He went on: “We will just have to wait another few weeks but it’s another few weeks of hope.
“That’s still all we have after all this time. It will happen soon but the clock is ticking and October will be with us before we know it..
“It just makes me wonder with the incredibly low Covid rate and strong vaccination program now finally here in the Balearic Islands that there is an ulterior motive somewhere, it’s just not making sense to me or anyone here on the island.”
Arrivals back in the UK from Green list countries still have to take a Covid test, but they do not have to isolate for 10 days.
Wayne’s sad post comes just two days after he posted an optimistic message sharing his belief that Spain and the Islands would make it onto the Green list this week.
He wrote: “Will we go green this week? I’m thinking yes.”
