According to the IMD, dense to very dense fog conditions are very likely to continue in Odisha, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi till January 5. On January 1 specifically, western Uttar Pradesh may receive isolated light rainfall. Foggy weather conditions are likely to continue in eastern Uttar Pradesh till January 2 and western Rajasthan till January 3, 2026. On the other hand, the IMD has forecast cold day conditions at isolated pockets for Punjab, Haryana , Chandigarh and Delhi and Bihar. Reduced visibility is expected across eastern and northern regions.
According to IMD’s temperature outlook, northwest India may see a gradual rise in minimum temperatures by 3–4 degrees Celsius over the next three days, followed by a fresh dip of 3–4 degrees Celsius thereafter. This suggests that while nights may become slightly less harsh around New Year’s Day, colder conditions could return soon after.

Light rain likely in Delhi today
The weather agency has partly cloudy sky and chances of very light to light rain at isolated places in Delhi on January 1, 2026. Shallow to moderate fog during morning hours is likely in the national capital, the IMD said in its weather bulletin. The maximum and minimum temperatures in Delhi are likely to be in the ranges of 14°C to 16°C and 9°C to 11°C, respectively.
On January 2, Delhi is likely to witness partly cloudy sky with moderate fog at many places with dense fog at a few places during morning hours. The maximum and minimum temperatures in Delhi are likely to be in the ranges of 16°C to 18°C and 09°C to 11°C, respectively.
Dense fog in Chandigarh, Delhi
The IMD has predicted dense fog over Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab, West Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, and parts of eastern India. The condition may potentially impact road, rail, and air traffic. Airports in Delhi-NCR and Amritsar, as well as major rail corridors in northern India, may face delays during early morning and late-night hours. Travellers are advised to stay alert for any delay or cancellation announcements.

For northern plains, dry weather is expected to persist, but dense fog warnings extend until at least January 5 for several states. By January 2 and 3, dense fog is likely to continue over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar, indicating that reduced visibility may remain a concern well after New Year’s celebrations conclude.
