Here’s how David Moyes‘ side rated at the Amex…
Alphonse Areola – 5
Beaten four times but not really at fault for any of them. Made a sensational save to tip Julio Enciso’s shot onto the bar.
Ben Johnson – 3
Had a stinker. Misjudged flight of ball in build-up to penalty. Made crucial far-post clearance to deny Mitoma second, but asleep at back-post as Joel Veltman doubled the lead.
Nayef Aguerd – 5
Aerially solid at the back and made a couple of good blocks but powerless to hold things together.
Angelo Ogbonna – 5
Had no answer to Brighton’s movement as West Ham were carved open time and again. Hurt making a low block and replaced.
Emerson – 4
Tried to provide thrust on the counter from left-back but torn apart by the excellent Solly March.
Tomas Soucek – 5
Early pressing almost forced chance for Ings and then saw decent chance blocked by Jason Steele. Booked for a late tackle on Moises Caicedo.
Declan Rice – 5
Visibily frustrated and lost head when going in late on Alexis Mac Allister. Outshone by Caicedo.
Lucas Paqueta – 4
Loose in possession and minimal early influence evaporated as game wore on.
Jarrod Bowen – 5
Tested Steele with good hit after racing onto loose pass but otherwise unable to fulfil usual role in leading the counter-attack.
Danny Ings – 4
Hardly had a kick and nothing like a sniff of an opening. A spectator.
Said Benrahma – 4
One of his frustrating afternoons and taken off at half-time. But fans were still furious and sung his name throughout second half.
Substitutes
Pablo Fornals (Benrahma 46’) – 5
Sent on to provide energy but little impact.
Kurt Zouma (Ogbonna 68’) – 5
Return from injury the one positive for West Ham.
Manuel Lanzini (Paqueta 75’) – N/A
Flynn Downes (Soucek 75’) – N/A
Unused: Hegyi, Anang, Cresswell, Scamacca
