Michael Cera will play the doll Allan and Ken’s best friend in the upcoming live-action movie Barbie – what happened to the doll?
Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie will be released in cinemas in July and the new teaser trailer introduced viewers to Barbieland and its whole crew of new dolls.
The movie posters and the trailer unveiled the addition of the long-forgotten doll Allan, who happens to be a very good friend of Ken.
But what happened to the doll in the toy line? Let’s find out.
What happened to Barbie doll Allan?
Allan made his debut in the doll line in 1964 as Ken’s best friend. He was described as a doll that can fit into Ken’s clothes and shared the same wardrobe.
His girlfriend is Midge Hadley’s boyfriend and his father-in-law is Mattel co-founder Ruth Handler. Allan’s original outfit included an iconic striped shirt and blue shorts.
The doll was introduced at the time when Barbie’s sister Skipper made a debut but was discontinued from the Mattel line in 1966.
Allan reappeared in 2008 as part of the release of the Campus Sweet Shop Midge Doll and Allan Doll Giftset and then in 2014 for the release of the Double Date 50th Anniversary Giftset.
Who plays Allan in the Barbie movie?
The upcoming Barbie movie wants to pay homage to the long-forgotten toy with the re-introduction of the character in the face of beloved actor Michael Cera.
Known for his roles in Superbad and Juno, Cera makes a great addition to the star-packed cast which includes the likes of Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Issa Rae, Will Ferrell, and others.

Cera joins the likes of a huge star-studded cast of Barbie and Ken dolls in Gerwig’s Barbie universe. Pop star Dua Lipa plays a blue-haired mermaid, while Kate McKinnon‘s Barbie is giving off a glam rock vibe.
Other cast members include Alexandra Shipp as Writer Barbie, Rita Arya as Pulitzer Prize-winning Barbie, and Ana Cruz Kayne as Supreme Court Justice Barbie.
