Stopping smoking can have a drastic impact on your health, and your body will respond in several different ways.
But you might have to go through a tough period before your body fully returns to a healthier state.
The NHS has shared what happens to your body right after you put down your last cigarette.
Your body will start to respond instantly, with your heart rate returning to normal after 20 minutes.
After eight hours the nicotine and carbon monoxide levels in the blood will reduce by more than half.
Oxygen levels in the blood will start to return to normal.
Incredibly, after just 48 hours the carbon monoxide will be eliminated from your body.
At this point the lungs will start to clear out the mucus and smoking debris from the body.
You may also notice your ability to taste and smell will improve because there will be no nicotine left in the body.
It’s after only 72 hours your breathing will become easier, your bronchial tubes will relax and you’ll feel more energetic.
Two to 12 weeks after you breathed in your last cigarette your circulation will improve.
Between three to nine months after quitting you will enjoy 10% improved lung function.
This means you’ll be coughing and wheezing less.
If you manage to keep it up for a year, your risk of heart disease will be half it used to be while smoking.
The risk of lung cancer will fall to half of that of a smoker after 10 years.
15 years after your last cigarette the risk of heart attack will fall to the same as a non-smoker.
