The Boston Red Sox host the Chicago White Sox at Fenway Park on Monday for their annual Patriots’ Day game. Here’s their record on the annual event.
April 19th is Patriots’ Day in Massachusetts, and it has become an annual tradition for the Red Sox to play an early day game every year.
Usually, this is the same day as the Boston Marathon, but the race has been pushed back to October due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Red Sox will still continue their Marathon Monday (the third Monday in April) tradition of starting the game at 11:10 am (ET).
What’s happened in the series so far?
In the first game of the four-game set against the White Sox, Boston won 7-1, on Saturday afternoon.
However, the White Sox swept a doubleheader on Sunday, winning Game 1 (3-2) and Game 2 (5-1).
The Red Sox, who lead the American League East by two games with a 10-6 record, will try to salvage a series split in their final game.
Chicago, meanwhile, enters the game with an 8-8 record and is third in the American League Central, two games back off first place Kansas City.
What is the Red Sox’ Patriots Day record?
The Red Sox’ record on Patriots’ Day is 70-53.
The Toronto Blue Jays, Boston’s 2011 Patriots’ Day visitor, have played in the holiday game four times, winning only in 2003.
According to bostonpastime.com, the Red Sox and Yankees have played each other 33 times in Patriots’ Day games, with the Yankees winning 22.
Games were postponed due to weather in 1959, 1961, 1965 and 1984.
2020’s Patriots’ Day game was cancelled due to Covid-19. The previous year, the Baltimore Orioles beat the Red Sox 8-1.
Why have the Red Sox been wearing yellow and blue jerseys?
The Red Sox sported a different look than usual over weekend against Chicago.
The team wore special yellow and blue uniforms as part of Nike’s MLB “City Connect” series, becoming the first of seven clubs to debut the set during the 2021 season.
The jerseys are said to capture the colour scheme of the Boston Marathon.
