The best starting words for Wordle
If you’re finding the viral word game a bit difficult, that’s probably because you’re not choosing a good starting word.
Many players have discovered that the best word to start with is ‘Adieu’ as it contains five different letters and three vowels.
This means that it eliminates the most number of letters possible in one go, giving you the best chance of winning.
Another good option is to choose a first word that has lots of different vowels, as almost every word in the English language contains at least one vowel.
If it’s been a while since you were at school, the vowels are A, E, I , O and U.
Here are some good starting words with lots of vowels: Ouija, Queue, Audio, Equal, Miaou, Aurei, Ourie, Auloi, Uraei and Kauai.

Tips for winning Wordle
If you want to guess the word in six tries every time, here are some helpful tips…
- We already covered this one, but choose words with lots of vowels.
- Use normal words, don’t think too obscure as it’s unlikely to be the answer.
- Only use real words, Wordle won’t let you type in a random selection of letters.
- Don’t just guess words that fit the correct letters, type words to eliminate other letters first.
- Remember that letters can appear twice in the same word.
- The best first words have three vowels and five different letters, like ‘Adieu’.
- Try not to reuse grey letters, it’s just a waste of a guess.
