Social network TikTok was first launched in 2016 and developed by ByteDance. The developers of TikTok may not have predicted its popularity but today it’s just as used as Facebook or Instagram. The number of TikTok users in the UK is set to reach 10 million by the end of 2021.
So, it would seem that if there’s anywhere you’d want to raise awareness about something, TikTok may be the place. The platform is renowned for its viral trends and videos. Just take the trends of Adrian’s Kickback (which saw thousands of people gather after one announcement went viral) or the many dances that catch on such as Megan Thee Stallion’s ‘Savage’.
What is ‘Justice for Callie’?
TikTok appears to have more uses than just entertainment, however. A Tennessee mother took to Facebook on July 22nd to share a horrific story about her 10-year-old daughter allegedly being abused.
Brittany O’Connell began her Facebook post: “I was hesitant to post this but we are on day 4, and my daughters voice is still being silenced! Very disturbing images I will not include the other pictures/videos as they are too graphic. The faces are also scratched out as they are juveniles.”
She also wrote: “My 10 year old daughter Callie was covered in blood and severely beaten”.

Why is Justice for Callie trending on TikTok?
Now, many TikTok users have taken to the video-sharing platform to share the hashtag #justiceforcallie.
Most users opted for camera-facing uploads of themselves and wanted to raise awareness about the incident. One user said: “What happened to her daughter is despicable”.
Another said: “I don’t usually post things like this, but this is a serious topic that needs to be talked about”.
TikTok user @hello_nurse_ said: “So, I wanted to come on her and utilise my platform, this is a story that has me shook to my core as a parent…”
#justiceforcallie goes viral
The hashtag #justiceforcallie has 757.5k views on TikTok at the time of writing.
As well as raising awareness for Callie on TikTok, others have started a Go Fund Me page and a Change.org petition.
As per Fox17, Callie’s case is still ongoing.
The news outlet wrote: “Elizabethton Police are investigating the attack as a juvenile assault. As of Thursday, no arrests have been made. There’s no word yet on a possible motive. The Tennessee Department of Children Services is also investigating the case.“
