Why is there a black ribbon on Google today?
A black ribbon has been placed on the Google homepage today to commemorate the death of Prince Philip.
On Friday (April 9th), Buckingham Palace announced that the Duke of Edinburgh, who is the husband of the Queen of England, had died aged 99.
In a statement, the palace said: “”It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.”
They also revealed that His Royal Highness “passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle”.
He had recently returned to Windsor Castle after spending almost a month in hospital where he received treatment for an infection and underwent a heart procedure.
What does a black ribbon symbolise?
A black ribbon is usually used as a symbol of mourning and remembrance.
By placing a black ribbon on its homepage, Google is commemorating the death of Prince Philip.
Britain has now entered eight days of national mourning following the Duke of Edniburgh’s death, meaning flags will be lowered to half mast, TV presenters will wear black and no new laws will be passed.
This mourning period will last until 8am on the day after Prince Philip’s funeral which will be in St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.
