Why is Simone Biles withdrawing from the Olympic all-around gymnastics competition?
American gymnast Simon Biles reportedly pulled out of the all-ground gymnastics competition due to mental health issues.
Following the withdrawal, a statement read: “We wholeheartedly support Simone’s decision and applaud her bravery in prioritizing her well-being. Her courage shows, yet again, while she is a role model for so many.”
Reports state that Simone disclosed that she was not in the right “headspace” to continue competing. She further added, “I’m still struggling with some things. It just sucks when you are fighting with your own head.”
According to The New York Times, Biles hasn’t lost an all-around competition since she was 16, back in 2013.
Will Simone Biles compete individually in the Olympics?
As per The Independent, Biles has qualified for every individual apparatus final and has not withdrawn from the vault, beam, parallel bars, or floor competitions. So, there is a likelihood that Biles will compete individually.
There isn’t an official statement from U.S.A. Gymnastics as of yet, confirming or denying if Biles will compete individually. Even so, The Independent reports that Simone is maintaining on track for a potential six golds in Tokyo.
Here’s to hoping that Biles will be able to focus on her mental wellbeing and compete individually.
Fans support the gymnast
Following the withdrawal, fans, friends and co-gymnasts alike have taken to social media to show support for Simone.
In talks with The New York Times, coach Jess Graba spoke out: “I think a lot of people don’t realize that it’s such a mental sport. If you have a week or two to prepare, you could probably get her back to what she needed to do.”
One person tweeted: “For all the amazing competition moments Simone has given us to look up to, it’s really this moment that we should be showing our younger generation. She has looked out for and cheered on these younger athletes every step of the way. Class act.”
Another wrote: “She’s even more special because of what she did today. Not only the greatest gymnast individual of all time but selfless in putting her team first; and the number of people she’ll encourage to know it’s ok to step away to protect your mental health will likely go untold.”
