Winter forecast 2026: A weak La Niña pattern is expected to continue through the upcoming winter season, according to the latest monthly update from NOAA’s Winter outlook and Climate Prediction Center. “A 71% chance that a weak La Niña will develop during October-December 2025 and impact the weather across much of the United States,” the agency confirmed. A La Niña Advisory remains in effect as cooler-than-average sea surface temperatures strengthen across the equatorial Pacific.

What is La Niña?

La Niña occurs when sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific drop below average for an extended period. This cooling alters atmospheric circulation patterns and can influence weather thousands of miles away, including across the United States.

How long will La Niña last?

La Niña is expected through winter 2025–26: Climate models strongly support the continuation of La Niña into winter. However, the pattern is expected to remain weak, meaning its typical impacts may be muted compared to stronger events.

NOAA projects a transition back to ENSO-neutral conditions by March 2026, estimating a 61% probability of neutral status returning as the Pacific gradually warms.

Live Events

How will La Niña affect the winter 2026 forecast?

Winter forecast 2026 due to La Niña: While La Niña is not the only factor shaping the winter 2026 forecast, it is one of the most influential global climate drivers. As per NOAA, historically, La Niña winters follow certain broad patterns in the US though a weaker event may soften these effects.

Temperature Trends: Who gets warmer or colder?

  • Southern US: Typically experiences a warmer-than-average winter.
  • Northern Plains and Upper Midwest: Often see colder-than-average temperatures.

These temperature contrasts may be less pronounced due to the weaker La Niña phase.

Precipitation patterns: Who gets wet or dry?

  • Pacific Northwest & Ohio Valley: Usually wetter in La Niña winters, the Weather channel predics.
  • Southern states: Tend to be drier than normal.

The weak strength may reduce the intensity of these typical precipitation shifts.

How could La Niña influence snowfall?

A NOAA analysis of past weak La Niña years found that they often produce above-average snowfall across much of the northern US, from the Pacific Northwest’s Cascades to the Upper Midwest and New England.

In contrast, below-average snowfall is more common across:

  • The southern Rockies
  • Parts of the Ohio Valley

Given the expected mild intensity of this event, snowfall patterns for the winter 2026 forecast could show regional variability rather than strong deviations from normal.

What to expect this winter season

While La Niña remains a key part of the winter 2026 forecast, other atmospheric factors, like the polar vortex, jet stream behavior, and short-term climate oscillations, will also play major roles. For now, NOAA’s outlook points to a winter influenced by a weaker La Niña, with subtle but noticeable effects on temperature, precipitation, and snowfall across the US.

FAQs: Winter 2026 Forecast

What is the winter 2026 forecast saying about La Niña?

The winter 2026 forecast indicates that a weak La Niña is expected to persist through the season. This weaker pattern may lead to milder and less predictable impacts compared to stronger La Niña years.

How will a weak La Niña affect temperatures in the US this winter?

Generally, La Niña winters bring colder conditions to the northern US and warmer-than-average weather in the South. Since this event is weak, the temperature differences may be less pronounced.

Will snowfall be affected during the winter 2026 forecast?

Historically, weak La Niña winters tend to produce above-average snowfall in the Northwest, Upper Midwest and parts of New England. Southern Rockies and parts of the Ohio Valley may see below-average snowfall.

What regions may see more rain or wet weather this winter?

The Pacific Northwest and parts of the Great Lakes/Ohio Valley typically see wetter conditions during La Niña winters. The winter 2026 forecast suggests these areas may still be wetter, though the effect could be weaker due to the mild strength of La Niña.

Will the southern US be drier this winter?

Yes, the southern tier of the US including Texas, the Gulf Coast and the Southeast—often experiences drier-than-normal winters during La Niña. A weak La Niña may still bring dryness but with less intensity.

When is La Niña expected to end?

NOAA projects that La Niña will likely transition to ENSO-neutral conditions by early 2026, most likely between January and March.

Does La Niña guarantee extreme cold or storms?

No. La Niña is just one factor in the winter 2026 forecast. Other climate patterns, such as the Arctic Oscillation and jet stream shifts, can influence cold waves, storm tracks, and snow events.

Should people prepare differently for a weak La Niña winter?

While impacts may be softer than usual, residents in northern states should still expect potential cold snaps and snow, while southern areas should prepare for periodic warm, dry spells. Local forecasts provide more accurate short-term guidance.
