A woman has been slammed for wasting food as she showed off her new-found cooking hack to cut bell peppers in seconds.
Mel, who is studies nutrition education at Columbia University in the US, posted the trick on TikTok where she responded to a viral soundtrack of “show me a life hack that you haven’t seen in your life”.
In the clip viewed more than 1 million times, Mel takes on the task to cut a bell pepper into strips without dropping the seeds everywhere.
She starts by cutting off the stem, flips it upside down and places it on a chopping board.
Then following the outline of the vegetable, Mel cuts it from bottom to top in a cross shape and peels the pepper off, revealing the centre where the seeds are.
The hack leaves Mel four chunky bits of bell peppers so she could throw away the hard centre part of the vegetable.
But the clip has divided the internet after some viewers said the hack “wasted the whole top of the pepper”.
Mel said she didn’t know about the hack before and it was “life-changing” for her.
A viewer commented: “You’re wasting food, are you cutting off the top and using that as well? Otherwise it’s not a hack.”
“That’s a whole lot of food waste,” a second penned while one suggested: “Just cut around the stem at the top and yank the whole thing out?”
Others who have tried Mel’s trick liked the hack, with one praising: “I’ve started doing this, it’s great.”
“Brilliant,” another wrote. “I will definitely save that one.”
“That’s so much easier and cleaner,” a third added.
