Argentine President Javier Milei is expected to attend US president-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration in January, according to Milei’s office.
Milei, a Trump admirer, was at a post-election victory party at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in November and a spokesperson said on Saturday that he would also attend the inauguration.
Trump’s transition team did not comment on whether Milei will be a guest at the Jan. 20 ceremony in Washington.
Incoming White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt had confirmed during a Thursday morning appearance on Fox and Friends that Trump had invited China’s President Xi Jinping and other world leaders to attend his inauguration.
No foreign head of state has attended a US presidential inauguration in at least a century, according to State Department records going back to 1874. The event is typically witnessed by ambassadors, US lawmakers and the general public.
Trump said on Thursday during an appearance at the New York Stock Exchange, where he was ringing the opening bell to kick off trading for the day, that he has been “thinking about inviting certain people to the inauguration” without referring to any specific individuals.
