SPRING is all but over and summer is rapidly approaching.
Heat wave predictions for June have already been circulated and now we await the inevitable disappointment of it being too hot or not hot enough – depending on your point of view.
Everyone is looking forward to this summer. Last year the summer was all but forgotten as the country grappled with the pandemic, social distancing restrictions and many of the population were also contemplating the uncertainties of life on furlough.
A year on and everyone is desperate to ensure this summer is markedly different from 2020 when even a heatwave would have failed to bring cheer with many of the country’s 66 million people locked indoors.
Signs of summer are already starting to emerge if you keep an eye open.
Very soon we will be bringing the fan down from the attic and then basking in lukewarm air while children will be keeping themselves alert to the passing of ice cream vans.
It is only a matter of time before the first person in the family suffers a wasp sting and contemplates the point of wasps – much as mankind has done ever since the very first wasp sting.
Others will know it is summer when they hear the distinctive sound of flip-flops and notice they are eating a lot more salad yet still drinking the same volume of piping hot tea – such is life in the British summer.
