Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey is already about to enter his fifth NFL season. His younger brother, Luke, is ready for a fresh start at the college level.
Luke McCaffrey played the pandemic-shortened 2020 season at the University of Nebraska. Barring any sudden changes, he’s leaving the Power 5 level for Rice and Conference USA.
Luke McCaffrey is transferring to Rice University
The Rice Owls finished with a 2-3 record in 2020 and only played five games amid the pandemic. Just to give you an idea of what Luke McCaffrey is walking into, the Owls haven’t won more than three games in a season since going 5-7 in 2015.
Perhaps McCaffrey, Christian’s younger brother, can change things. A former top high school prospect in Colorado, the younger McCaffrey completed 48 of his 76 passes for 466 yards, a touchdown, and six interceptions at Nebraska in 2020. He also ran for 364 yards and three touchdowns on 5.6 yards per carry.
Owls head coach Mike Bloomgren coached at Stanford from 2011-17 and served as the offensive coordinator in his final five seasons there. His presence helped Christian become an All-American running back and an eventual first-round draft pick.
McCaffrey is using the transfer portal to rack up frequent flyer miles at a very young age.
The explosive dual-threat quarterback, who turned 20 in April, ended the 2020 season at Nebraska. He announced in Februrary that he would transfer to Louisville but he did not enroll there until early June.
Any hopes of McCaffrey becoming the Cardinals’ next star quarterback ended when he re-entered the portal on Monday, June 7. However, the former top recruit should have an excellent opportunity to win the Owls’ starting quarterback job.
According to The Athletic, McCaffrey can still use his one-time transfer exception and be immediately eligible in 2021. He did not attend any classes at Louisville, and the school never put him on scholarship. Because he is entering his third season at the college level, Although McCaffrey will be eligible to enter the 2022 NFL draft, he would need a historic season in the air and on the ground to even warrant being selected in the later rounds.
The Owls open their 2021 season against the Arkansas Razorbacks on Saturday, September 4. Rice also plays Houston and Texas in non-conference play.
Another brother, Dylan, plays at Northern Colorado
The 2021 football season will be a busy one for the McCaffrey family.
Luke is at Rice, where he’ll try to help the Owls become a winning program again. His older brother, Dylan, is a former Michigan quarterback who transferred to Northern Colorado this offseason. Dylan will play for his father, Ed, who is the Bears’ head coach.
Dylan completed 18 of his 35 pass attempts between the 2018 and 2019 seasons for 242 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for 166 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries.
And don’t forget about Christian, who is entering his fifth season with the Panthers. Injuries limited the 2019 Pro Bowl selection to 374 yards from scrimmage and six touchdowns in three games last year.
