A COLOURFUL community art display in Ellesmere with a mermaid theme has been hailed as ‘fintastic’ by visitors and townsfolk.
At least 80 brightly-designed ‘meremaids’ and ‘meremen’ have bobbed up in shops, pubs and other premises in a project aimed at encouraging more people to take a look around the town centre this summer.
Local churches, the town hall, library and even the local Churchmere Medical Centre are showcasing the artistic talents of local residents, including schoolchildren who have joined forces to support the nine-week public exhibition organised by library assistant Sally Poynton.
Helped by her husband, Alan, she has spent countless hours cutting out and distributing scores of mermaid-shaped templates which have now been vividly transformed into a kaleidoscope of colour to form a figure-of eight trail through Ellesmere’s main streets.
Visitors Jane Hoccom and Nick Edwards from Bedfordshire thought the mermaid figures were a “fantastic idea” when they popped into the town centre during their canal boat holiday.
“Every small town deserves to do well after the hardships of the past year or so,” added Mr Edwards, “and it lovely to see Ellesmere looking so colourful”
Helen Hale, who runs the Pure Beauty Salon on Scotland Street, said she hoped the art trail would help to generate more visitors and give the town a boost.
“It’ s great to be involved in a project like this and have a chance to do something different,” she said.
Leaflets featuring a trail map are available at the library, Mere Motors, Ismay’s, Moolah and Lily the Pink Pink. They include a mermaid-themed quiz and a ‘spot the meremaid’ competition offering a family ticket to the Blue Planet Aquarium at Ellesmere Port as first prize.
The trail will be open until September 6.
