Malik Henry’s long journey around the college football world is officially over.
Henry, the former Florida State quarterback who appeared on Netflix’s Last Chance U, didn’t hang up his cleats to pursue a post-football career. Actually, the one-time top prospect is doing the opposite.
Nearly two years after finally playing in an FBS college football game, Malik Henry has begun his professional career.
Henry, who last saw action at the University of Nevada in 2019, is now playing for the Frisco Fighters, an indoor football team in Texas. He did not throw a pass in either of the Fighters’ first two games.
Although the Fighters intended to play its first game in 2020, the Indoor Football League only completed two games before the coronavirus pandemic postponed the season.
The Fighters finally played the first game in franchise history on May 15, 2021. Dallas Cowboys legend Drew Pearson serves as the team’s chief relationships officer and a television analyst.
When Malik Henry enrolled at Florida State University in January 2016, he arrived as a consensus 4-star quarterback prospect with a bright future.
He never threw a pass for the Seminoles, however, and transferred after his redshirt freshman season. FSU suspended him in August 2016 after he violated team rules.
Henry transferred to Independence Community College in Kansas; the school appeared on the third and fourth seasons of Netflix’s Last Chance U. He completed 53.9% of his passes that season for 1,383 yards, 10 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. The former Seminoles quarterback also rushed for two touchdowns.
After clashing with teammates and the coaching staff, he briefly returned to the Pirates in 2018. Henry threw one touchdown and three interceptions across two games that year.
Henry recently completed 53.8% of his passes for 593 yards, a touchdown, and four interceptions at Nevada in 2019. He entered the transfer portal after that season and did not catch on with another school.
Several former ‘Last Chance U’ players have reached the NFL
If Henry ever plays in an NFL game, he won’t be the first former Last Chance U alum to reach the sport’s highest level.
John Franklin III, another former Florida State quarterback, recently won a Super Bowl ring with the Buccaneers. The speedy Franklin, who spent the 2015 season at East Mississippi Community College, has played receiver and defensive back in the NFL after going undrafted in 2018.
Rakeem Boyd, an ex-teammate of Henry’s at Independence, signed with the Detroit Lions after he went unselected in the 2021 NFL draft. Jaguars linebacker Dakota Allen, another EMCC alum, totaled a career-high 12 tackles in 13 games last season.
Ravens offensive lineman Tyre Phillips, who began his career at EMCC, started eight games as a rookie last year. Considering that Henry is currently a backup quarterback in the Indoor Football League, he has a long way to go before joining the Last Chance U to the NFL pipeline.
