VAR FROM GOOD
The field might look the part but one thing that Southampton are unhappy with is the treatment they have recently received from VAR.
Two decisions went against the Saints in their last Premier League outing against Wolves which they felt cost them the game.
Southampton left-back, Ryan Bertrand was penalised when the ball struck his arm in the box from a close range Nelson Semedo shot resulting in a spot kick.
But there was no level of consistency shown when a dropping ball hit Wolves defender Leander Dendoncker’s arm in the Wolves penalty area.
Oriol Romeu questioned the use of VAR to make the decisions on handballs and he believes that is difficult to conclude as to what should or shouldn’t be given as a penalty for handball in the box.
The Saints midfielder said: “We all looked at the images after the game and we were a bit shocked.
“From the game, I had many bodies to look through and I didn’t really see it but my point is, and I guess most of the boys think the same, we didn’t really understand why it was punished in our box and not punished in their box.
“I know that the rule is there, we can agree or not, it is there. So if it is a penalty on our side, why hasn’t it been given on the other side? That’s frustrating.
“I don’t know, maybe someone will give us a reason or an explanation but we will have to accept it, digest it and go again.”
Let’s hope for no VAR drama today but I have to admit, it does spark interesting debates.
