Have you seen a video where grapes cut in half and put in a typical domestic microwave produce plasma? This spectacular and also very simple experiment is truly interesting to watch. But did you know that the basis of this physical mechanism was explained only very recently?

How does this happen? How can grapes be the source of electric discharges and hot plasma? There are several pre-conditions that need to be fulfilled in order to make this work: you have to have two grapes, or one grape cut in half; they have to be put close to each other; refractive index of grapes must be such that allows to trap microwaves inside, in order to produce the effect of resonance. If done right, a peak electromagnetic energy discharge is generated at the point where grapes touch or connect through a thin strip of their skin.
