Filmmaker Dibakar Banerjee recently released his film Love Sex Aur Dhokha 2 on April 20, which didn’t receive a good response from critics and audiences. The movie’s debut alongside another Hindi film, Do Aur Do Pyaar, marked a challenging start at the box office. Notably, Do Aur Do Pyaar starring Vidya Balan did better than LSD 2 on the opening day.
In an interview with Indianexpress.com shortly after the release, Banerjee highlighted the competitive landscape. He emphasised the struggle for screens, citing the recent Eid clash between major films like Bade Miyan Chote Miyan and Maidaan. These clashes, he explained, often lead to theatres being pre-booked, limiting the availability of screens for other releases like LSD 2.
Dibakar Banerjee Says ‘It’s All About Power’ As He Talks About LSD 2’s Limited Release
Banerjee pointed out the influence of power dynamics in film distribution. He remarked, “Sometimes, a film has that transgressive quality which transgresses its immediate audience… Sometimes, through brute force. If you have the money. For instance, what’s happening right now? LSD 2 came out today, there; ‘s another film too that has been released today, and the ground reality is that almost 2 weeks ago another huge film was released, that unfortunately didn’t do well for itself.”
“However, it had already booked many movie theatres in advance and spent that money. So now those screens can’t be used, or one is still thinking about what to do with those screens, someone must be making furious calls in closed rooms to adjust monies, trying to uncover what the deal is. But those screens are booked, so there are only that many screens left for LSD and other films to arrive and find the best screens. So, this is also about power. Who is more powerful?”
He acknowledged the challenge for smaller productions like his own to secure optimal screening opportunities amidst competition from larger productions. Dibakar mentioned that if someone understands how to connect with a larger audience, they’ll make plans accordingly. However, if someone lacks the necessary skills, they might end up doing something a bit outdated.
Dibakar Claims His Films Rely On ‘Word-Of Mouth’, Praises Ektaa Kapoor And Aamir Khan
Dibakar Banerjee also shared insights into the industry’s perceptions of his work, noting that his films often diverge from mainstream tropes. He recounted industry feedback, which often categorises his films as relying on ‘word-of-mouth’ rather than marketing strategies for success.
Referencing his experience with his abandoned Netflix film, Banerjee emphasised the importance of strategic planning and adaptability in navigating the film industry’s challenges. He commended producers like Ektaa Kapoor and Aamir Khan for their proactive approaches to filmmaking, contrasting them with the industry’s broader tendency towards complacency.
