The White House criticised Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Thursday, accusing him of trying to “save face” after the Iranian supreme leader downplayed the impact of US strikes on Tehran’s nuclear program. “We saw the Ayatollah’s video, and when you have a totalitarian regime, you need to save face,” Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt remarked during a briefing following Khamenei’s first appearance since the strikes.
