The federal government will announce new gun control measures today — one day before the anniversary of the massacre at École Polytechnique de Montréal.
Two senior government officials told Radio-Canada the government will be adding several hundred models and variants to its list of banned weapons.
Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc and Public Services and Procurement Minister Jean-Yves Duclos, the government’s Quebec lieutenant, will make the announcement this afternoon, sources said.
The government also will be implementing measures stemming from Bill C-21, the firearms bill that was adopted in 2023.
The bill included provisions to make it easier to revoke licences and firearms from people who commit violent acts.
Last week, women’s groups and victims’ families questioned the government about some of C-21’s long-awaited measures and why they have not yet been implemented.
The federal government’s gun buyback program still has not collected a single gun.
Friday is the 35th anniversary of the anti-feminist attack that killed 14 women at École Polytechnique.
