LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) – Area health officials are reacting to a major development in the race to protect children from COVID-19.
Pfizer is now saying they will submit new data to the FDA showing that their vaccine is safe and effective for kids ages 5-11. This comes after clinical trials involving about 2,200 kids in both the U.S. and Europe.
An Infection Preventionist with Gundersen Health System called this new information a step in the right direction.
“Since the beginning of the pandemic we have really wanted to keep as many people safe as possible,” Infection Preventionist Meghan Buechel said. “So, this new information means we can make more people protected against COVID-19 and therefore make our community so much safer.”
Buechel said she predicts Pfizer’s vaccine for kids will likely be approved for emergency use by the end of the week, but it could still take 4-6 weeks for full FDA approval.
