Lockheed Martin prepares TacSat for 2025 launch to enhance space connectivity

Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] has finalized preparations for its Tactical Satellite (TacSat), a next-generation technology demonstration platform set for launch in 2025 aboard Firefly Aerospace’s Alpha rocket. Designed to revolutionize intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, TacSat aims to validate cutting-edge sensing and communication capabilities in space.
The satellite will support cross-domain operations by showcasing advanced connectivity capabilities during exercises next year, enabling swift execution of tactical missions.
“This area of focus is especially important to the future of space as it becomes a more contested environment,” said Paul Koether, director of tactical space at Lockheed Martin. “We’re thrilled to be one step closer to displaying game-changing communications and sensing in the ultimate high ground.”
Onboard Innovations
TacSat integrates advanced technologies designed for modern battlefield demands. At its core, the satellite will feature Lockheed Martin’s infrared sensor, a proven system adapted for space to deliver high-quality imagery. This sensor will integrate seamlessly with federated Battle Management Command and Control (BMC2) systems, offering joint forces a comprehensive view of evolving threats.
The satellite will also carry Lockheed Martin’s first 5G.MIL payload, enabling cellular-like networking for military satellites. This pioneering technology will bolster the resilience of satellite constellations and enhance connectivity across air, sea, and land domains. The influx of actionable data facilitated by this payload aims to strengthen allied forces’ capabilities in identifying and addressing threats.
Strategic Context
TacSat’s mission aligns with the broader objective of advancing Space-enhanced Combined Joint All-Domain Command and Control (CJADC2), a system connecting military assets globally. The satellite will participate in operational exercises that contribute to the Find, Fix, Track, Target, Engage, Assess (F2T2EA) mission framework.
Having completed rigorous environmental testing earlier this year, TacSat has passed its final evaluations at Lockheed Martin’s facility in Littleton, Colorado. The satellite is now preparing for shipment to California, where it will undergo final processing before its scheduled launch in 2025.
