The Maha Kumbh Mela is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, drawing millions of devotees to Prayagraj. Among them was Moni Bhonsle, a young woman from Indore who had long been selling Rudraksha and pearl garlands alongside her family at such events. However, this year was different. Photographers captured her presence amidst the crowds, and soon, her images went viral on social media. People were drawn to her calm demeanour and striking appearance, leading to her being nicknamed “Mona Lisa.”

Social Media Speculation: The Rs 10 Crore Claim

As Moni’s images spread online, so did speculation about her financial success. As reported by TOI, several viral posts claimed that she had amassed Rs 10 crore in just 10 days through garland sales. This astounding figure quickly became a talking point, with many questioning its credibility. When asked about these reports, Moni dismissed them outright, saying, “If I earned so much money, then why would I live here and why would I sell garlands?” Her statement underscored the reality that, despite the viral attention, the financial gains were exaggerated.

Fame’s Disruptive Impact on Business

While many assumed Moni’s newfound fame translated into increased sales, the reality was quite different. Her father explained that instead of buying garlands, people were more interested in taking selfies and recording videos with Moni. This unexpected shift in focus hindered their ability to conduct business effectively. In fact, Moni later revealed that due to declining sales, she had to borrow Rs 35,000 to sustain herself and her family.

Overwhelming Attention and Safety Concerns

As her popularity surged, Moni became the centre of attention at the Mela, with visitors, photographers, and YouTubers constantly surrounding her. The increasing crowd made it difficult for her to move freely or carry out her work. Several videos circulating on social media showed instances where she was chased by eager onlookers. The overwhelming nature of this attention raised concerns for her safety.

In response to the escalating situation, Moni announced her departure from the event. In a heartfelt social media message, she shared, “Parivar aur apni suraksha ke liye mujhe wapas Indore jana pad raha hai, ho sakta to agle saahi snaan tak wapas milte hain, Prayagraj Mahakumbh mein. Sabhi ke sahyog aur pyaar ke liye dil se dhanyavaad.” (I have to go back to Indore for my family and my safety. If possible, I will be back for the next Maha Kumbh). Her departure highlighted the unintended consequences of viral fame, where personal security and privacy often become compromised.

The Maha Kumbh Mela has been a hub for viral stories this year. Just days before Moni’s rise to fame, social media was abuzz with another sensation—Abhey Singh, an IIT graduate turned ascetic known as “IITian Baba.” These instances reflect how modern technology and social media have begun reshaping narratives around traditional events, bringing individual stories to the forefront of public attention.

Tragic Stampede at Sangam Ghat

Amidst the buzz surrounding Moni Bhonsle’s story, a tragic event unfolded at Sangam Ghat in Prayagraj. A stampede-like incident occurred due to an overwhelming influx of devotees ahead of Mauni Amavasya Snan. According to some reports, at least 30 people lost their lives in the chaos. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and assured that the state government and local administration were conducting relief operations to support those affected.Despite the challenges posed by her viral fame, Moni has expressed aspirations beyond garland selling. She has hinted at an interest in acting, stating that she would consider pursuing it if her parents permitted. While her journey at Maha Kumbh 2025 ended abruptly, her story has sparked wider discussions on the impact of sudden internet fame, the intrusion of privacy, and the balance between recognition and personal security.

As the Maha Kumbh continues, authorities remain focused on managing the large crowds and ensuring the safety of attendees to prevent further incidents.
