After Nando’s ran out of chicken, the UK’s favourite fast-food chains continue facing shortage issues, with McDonald’s being the latest victim.
McDonald’s has been forced to pull milkshakes and some bottled drinks from its menu at restaurants in England, Scotland, and Wales, as the world’s favourite junk food store is having supply disruptions.
Costumers have been sharing their frustration on social media, wondering why the iconic milkshakes are unavailable everywhere because evidently, it’s a bigger deal than just “machine’s out of order.”
McDonald’s milkshake ingredients explored
McDonald’s milkshakes are the UK’s favourite “I’m lovin’ it” drink, so delicious that can even cure a hangover, by popular belief.
As the chain has announced that they are facing supply problems, people are wondering what the ingredients of the brand’s famous milkshakes are.
According to McDonald’s website, the ingredients of the milkshake base are:
EITHER: Skimmed MILK, Sugar, Cream, Whey Powder, Glucose Syrup, Stabilisers (Guar Gum, Carrageenan, Carob Gum).
OR: Reconstituted Skimmed MILK, Sugar, Cream, Skimmed MILK Powder, Glucose Syrup, Whey Powder, Stabilisers (Guar Gum, Carrageenan, Locust Bean Gum), Natural Flavouring.
OR: MILK (2.9% fat), Sugar, Whey Powder, Glucose Syrup, Stabilisers (Carrageenan, Locust Bean Gum, Guar Gum).
OR: Whole MILK, Sugar, Whey Powder, Glucose Syrup, Stabilisers (Guar Gum, Carageenan, Locust Bean Gum).
Why is McDonald’s out of milkshakes?
It looks like the reason why the McDonald’s milkshakes are unavailable, isn’t because ingredients are hard to find, but because of politics.
Ever since Brexit, the UK has been facing a shortage of lorry drivers due to new EU immigration rules and Covid restrictions that have caused supply problems to many stores, including the fast-food giant McDonald’s.
According to the BBC, McDonald’s has stated: “As reported, a number of issues are impacting retailers in the UK at the moment, one of which is the nationwide shortage of HGV drivers,” confirming that there isn’t an actual shortage in ingredients, but in lorry drivers.
Last week, Nando’s was forced to close several stores across the UK as it ran out of chicken, and now McDonald’s is out of milkshakes and bottled drinks.
A survey by the Road Haulage Association (RHA) estimated there was a shortage of more than 100,000 drivers in the UK, out of a pre-pandemic total of about 600,000.
