Callum Hudson-Odoi, who impressed in his introduction, grabbed a last gasp consolation to stab home Kai Havertz’s cross.
It was a brutal reminder to Chelsea that they are still miles away from being title contenders.

Edouard Mendy – 5/10
Exposed by his defenders but he should have done better on a couple of the goals at least.
Made one very good save in the second half.
Cesar Azpilicueta – 4
The captain was non-existent on the pitch, and non-existent as a leader, he only folded like the rest of them did.
Kurt Zouma – 4
Too slow at closing the ball, not enough urgency in his defending, and a poor showing just like the rest of those around him.

Thiago Silva – 5
He was slightly better than others – at least looking to pass forward when Chelsea had possession and make things happen.
But he also got exposed defensively and didn’t do enough to stop the City threat.
Ben Chilwell – 5
A passenger pretty much, all apart from a few early moments when he looked a threat in the attacking third for Chelsea.
N’Golo Kante – 3
Completely exposed on a number of occasions as the sole holding midfielder.
His tracking was clueless, he switched off a number of times, and he wasn’t showing enough urgency to get back in – which is very unlike him.
Put out of his misery on 63 minutes when he came off for Gilmour.
Mason Mount – 6
One of the few who looked like he cared and looked like he was at least trying to make something happen in attack.
But he probably should have helped Kante out a bit more by getting back in when we were under the cosh.
Mateo Kovacic – 5
Similar to Mount in terms of pretty much leaving Kante to it defensively, and was non-existent in the defensive phase just being walked through by the City attackers.
He showed a few better moments on the ball in the second half.
Hakim Ziyech – 6
Some bright moments and good passes early on, but he soon became a passenger like the rest of Chelsea’s attackers when City took control of the game. Subbed off for Hudson-Odoi on 63 minutes.
Timo Werner – 5
He was unlucky not to win a penalty, and showed some half-promising moments in attack at least.
Like the rest of the Chelsea players, he became a spectator like the rest of us watching.
Christian Pulisic – 6
It was tough for him, but he did look to spark on the rare moments that Chelsea had an attack and used the ball well.

Billy Gilmour for Kante (63 mins) – 7
Comfortable on the ball and replaced Kante well. Played without fear.
Callum Hudson-Odoi for Ziyech (63 mins) – 7
Didn’t have much time to affect things but looked a real threat on the right and grabbed a goal at the death.
Kai Havertz for Kovacic (74 mins) – N/A
Managed to grab an assist with a teasing cross for Hudson-Odoi.
