MORE than 50 singers turned up to sing with members of an Oswestry-based choir recently.
The Cantiones choir welcomed singers from Chester, Wrexham, Shrewsbury, Whitchurch, Ruhin and many other areas to join in with choruses from the popular Messiah on Saturday, September 25.
Hosted at Holy Trinity Church in Oswestry, the event was led by Cantiones’ musical director Martin Bussey, and expertly accompanied by the choir’s former musical director Gerry Howe.
Although Cantiones has been rehearsing safely together for some time, other singers have not been able to sing since the start of Covid.
One visiting singer commented: “Having not sung for nearly two-and-a-half years, it was a baptism of fire – exhausting but inspiring.”
Another visiting singer said: “It was great to be singing with a full choir again.”
Although the focus of the day was the music, guests also enjoyed cakes and other refreshments supplied by choir members.
Cantiones will be performing their next concert, ‘Remembrance and Hope’, at Holy Trinity Church at 3pm on Saturday, November 6, details of which and booking information are available by visiting the choir’s website www.cantiones.org.uk
Mr Bussey said: “This promises to be a stimulating and moving concert with well-known choral gems such as Parry’s memorial piece ‘My soul there is a country’, composed during the First World War, culminating in the same composer’s vibrant setting of John Milton, ‘Blest pair of sirens’.
“In between are Finzi’s exuberant ‘My spirit sang all day’ and Mozart’s perennially popular ‘Ave verum’.
“The choir currently has spaces for Sopranos and Tenors.”
