Shadow Climate Change Minister Chris Bowen says Labor is siding in “Australia’s national interest” by defending French President Emmanuel Macron over Prime Minister Scott Morrison.
Mr Macron has accused Mr Morrison of lying over the submarine deal, something the prime minister has denied.
“There’s the relationship with France; now the tragedy of this is that Emmanuel Macron was a president who has shown great interest in Australia, great interest in the Indo-Pacific, he sees France as a country under his presidency engaged with us,” Mr Bowen told Sky News Australia.
“Tragically, Scott Morrison has managed to trash that, quickly, with his very clumsy handling.
“Secondly, of interest to the Australian people is Scott Morrison’s fundamental dishonesty; I mean this guy lies, he lies to Australians, he lies at every opportunity, he lies about Labor, he lies about the past.”
Mr Bowen says it is “shocking” Mr Morrison has gotten Australia into a situation where France is upset with the handling of the submarine contract but it is “utterly unsurprising”.
