Rare display of close to 500 nativity scenes at The Red Barn off SH-35 in Calhoun County
Nativity Exhibit at The Red Barn in Port Lavaca
PORT LAVACA, Texas – Kathy Neiswender walked through the 2nd Annual Nativity Exhibit in Port Lavaca Friday evening in awe. She could not pick a favorite among the close to 500 manger scenes. She finally concluded they were all her favorite as they remind Jesus is the reason for the season.
Veronica Koliba is co-owner of The Red Barn at 3187 SH-35 in Port Lavaca, she was inspired to create the exhibit starting with one owned by her grandparents. Koliba then invited the community to submit their nativities and the display grew and grew.
There are many handcrafted, handmade, hand-painted and unique nativity scenes at the exhibit. It is only open for three days because Koliba wants to return the borrowed ones to their homes for the holidays.
While there have been many stories over the years about a stolen baby Jesus, it’s the opposite here. At the entrance a small baby Jesus in a manger sits near the sign in sheet. Under it is a price tag for 10 cents. It is clearly an antique but no one knows the possible year it was created or where the rest of the pieces might be.
You can visit the exhibit today and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Matthew 1:20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.”
