The festive season is coming up rapidly now and it is a time that we all associate with fun and games. Games have always been a key part of the festivities, from traditional board games to the latest cutting edge computer ones.
That is the thing though: there are so many different types of game and titles on the market that it can be hard to know where to start in planning your Christmas. For that reason we have put together a handy guide to the games that you really should be giving a go this festive season, so you don’t end up with a duffer.
- Super Mario 3D World
Nintendo is leading the field when it comes to computer games this Christmas. The company has really delivered in 2021, launching a raft of fresh titles plus exciting sequels to classic games for the Nintendo Switch. Of course, Super Mario is one of its iconic characters and the new 3D World game befits that status.
It falls somewhere between the 2D Mario titles and state-of-the-art 3D tech and offers fast-paced multiplayer action that you can enjoy with friends. The object of the game is to get to the flagpole ahead of the other characters and if you opt for the deluxe version you will get Bowser’s Fury as a free add-on.
- Online Slots
We all need some time to ourselves during the festive season and online slots are the ideal game to play during those periods. The slots on offer these days come with a variety of themes, ranging from hit movies to ancient myths and legends, so the actual play is more absorbing than ever before.
Slots offer simple and fun gaming action anyway, along with a great chance of winning some extra Christmas cash. Some of them even have progressive jackpots that run to hundreds of thousands of pounds!
- Santa Limbo
If you are spending the holiday season with your family than a Christmas party game will really help things go with a swing. Santa Limbo is a simple game to organise and so funny and silly that it will be impossible for anyone to stay in a bad mood.
All you need is a limbo stick, although a Father Christmas costume will also help. Begin by positioning the stick at a standard height for starting.
Then each player has to try to limbo beneath it while sporting a fat Father Christmas stomach – usually a plump pillow. After every person has had a turn, move the stick lower to make the next round more difficult.
- Ticket to Ride: London
Most of us spend Christmas eating and drinking quite a lot, so sometimes we want to find our fun in a game that is a bit more sedate and relaxing. That is where a board game comes into its own.
People still play classic board games in this high-tech era, but Ticket to Ride: London – part of a very successful games franchise – is a fun blend of traditional board games and modern ones. The aim of the game is to put together London bus routes, with points won based on complexity and length.
It can be played by up to four people and is also ideal for children aged five or over, so it will be perfect for some family festive fun.
- Christmas Carol Pictionary
This will be great for adults to play during a Christmas party. The first step is to split the partygoers into two different teams, before writing the names of carols onto flash cards.
A member of one of the teams then takes a card and is given 60 seconds to draw a picture that will let their team-mates guess its name. Each right guess earns the team a point and the winner is the first team to reach 20.
- Back to the Future: Back in Time
If you are spending Christmas hanging out with fellow movie geeks, what could be better than a Back to the Future board game? The object is to get the timeline of history right by going back to 1955 and ensuring Marty McFly’s mum does not date Biff the bully – just like in the 1985 film.
All of the great characters from the iconic film are there to play as and the whole thing has been put together with real care and love. It also is a co-operative game, rather than a competitive one, so the Christmas spirit stays high.
- Metroid Dread
This game served as a calling card for the Nintendo Switch OLED console and its stunning graphics earned it the Game Awards prize for Best Action/Adventure title. You take on the role of Samus Aran, a bounty hunter battling E.M.M.I robots while trying to find out the reason for a strange signal.
This is a really exciting game that will ensure you are not bored during those parts of Christmas when you are on your own. It is also another reason why Nintendo owns the 2021 Christmas gaming market.
From board games for the family, to console titles to play on your own and party games for big gatherings, there are Christmas games for every occasion. Pick one of those from the list above for whatever festive plans you have and you are guaranteed to enjoy a jolly holiday season.
