The family had the money set aside for back-to-school supplies for their children, now that money is going to fix their car
VICTORIA, Texas – The Salazar family was about to purchase back-to-school supplies for their children but had to use that money to repair their family suburban after thieves took their catalytic converter.
On August 6 the Salazar family noticed someone outside their driveway, and before they knew it, they were a victim of catalytic converter theft.
“My nephew tells me that somebody is messing with the car, I tell my wife to go get the camera, I thought they were missing with the leaking (on the vehicle), come to find out they were under my car. I’m like ‘what are you doing under my car?’, I go and look under there, my catalytic converter is gone,” said Abel Salazar.
The family was already down to their only working car after their other one recently stopped working. Laura Salazar tells us it’s made getting things like back-to-school supplies for their kids next to impossible after they had to spend nearly 700 dollars to replace their stolen catalytic converter
“Don’t steal from people that are barely making ends meet…realize what you’re doing, these are kids with disabilities that you stole from”, said Laura Salazar.
Catalytic converter thefts are on the rise, since January there have been 60 cases of catalytic converter thefts here in Victoria County. We spoke with Captain Eline Moya with the Victoria Police Department on what you can do to keep those catalytic converters safe.
“Putting their vehicle in a garage, parking in a well-lit area, and most importantly when you see something suspicious call it in, let the officers know so we can put our resources in that area,” said Captain Moya.
The thieves’ getaway car is an older model extended cab Chevy or GMC dually with black rims and a large white decal on the rear windshield, if you see this car around town notify authorities.
The Salazar family told us that the investigation into their case is ongoing and could take a while until the thieves are caught. If you want to donate to the Salazar family you can reach out to them here: Lachica1184@gmail.com
