VICTORIA, Texas – Colonel Mike Petrash and Petty Officer Will Martin decided that they wanted to do something for veterans here in Victoria after witnessing the recent events in Afghanistan.
Navy veteran will martin grew concerned for his fellow veterans after hearing that a VA call center in Houston had gotten an influx of calls from Afghanistan veterans into their suicide hotline, that’s when Martin knew he had to do something to help.
“We wanted to get together, not just the veterans, we want the whole community come out and pray with us and pray for our Afghan veterans, and let them know that we’re here for them and we’re proud of the job they’ve done in Afghanistan,” said Martin.
The event will be next Thursday, August 26
starting at 8 p.m. at the Field of Honor located at 4802 John Stockbauer drive. At the event, they won’t just be praying for veterans, but also for those who face danger or might be trapped in Afghanistan as the Taliban tighten their stronghold on the country.
“To the people in Afghanistan we want to send the message that we are praying heartily for their safe passage out of harm’s way,” said Martin.
The event is in coordination with the American Legion and the Warriors Weekend organization which seeks to help and honor veterans, and that’s where army veteran Colonel Mike Petrash offered a lending hand.
“We welcome all faiths, just come out here, pray for the government, pray for the warriors, pray for their families,” said Petrash.
Colonel Petrash also encouraged not just Afghanistan veterans to come, but any and all veterans.
“You can’t see all wounds, there are some you don’t see. Out here we minster everyone so come out here. I think it would be good for you to be out here among praying people among folk who have your best interests in mind,” said Petrash.
Petrash said from there that’s when they can offer not just fellowship, but resources for veterans right here in the crossroads, such as the VA clinic, Warrior’s Weekend, and the Crossroads Area Veteran Center. Petrash also noted the power of prayer.
“And let me tell you something, our prayers aren’t any less effective than those that come from Washington DC, I think we might even have an edge on them,” said Petrash.
The event will last about an hour and will end with a closing prayer and the playing of ‘Taps’.
