BRITAIN is bracing for a 48-hour snow bomb to hit next week with temperatures plunging to -5C thanks to an icy polar blast.
Temperatures will nosedive this weekend with the chilliest nights of the winter expected so far.
A level 2 “severe” cold weather alert has also been raised by the Met Office, meaning there will be danger to life as frigid temperatures pose serious health risks to vulnerable Brits.
Temperatures will drop well below freezing early next week as the UK prepares for a cold December.
A 48-hour snow flurry is forecast to follow the freeze next Thursday, starting in Scotland before covering north-east England and spreading to the south-east.
Up to 5cm of snow is expected across Scotland, Wales and the south of England on Thursday, while some areas are expected to reach -5C by Friday.

CHILLY CONDITIONS
Not only will most of England see some thick fog but temperatures are set to remain on the chilly side for most of the day.
The fog is predicted to blanket Britain and led to temperatures dropping to -5C overnight.
The Met Office forecast for Friday says: “Early fog and low cloud slow to clear from some areas and lingering all day over parts of Wales and central and eastern England.”

FOGGY NOTION: ENGLAND UNDER BLANKET OF FOG
Most Brits got today underway beneath of blanket of fog which is expected to linger for some time.
The Met Office is expecting the conditions to last until midday and have issued a yellow weather warning.
It said widespread dense fog would develop throughout the morning and journeys could be disrupted.

FOG is most widespread through central and southern England.
Temperatures today will hover at around 7C or 8C across the UK, with average temperatures in the North of England dipping to 6C.
Across the South of England, the mercury will nudge up to an average of 8C.

It will be a dry but dull start to the day with early patches of mist and fog which will be slow to clear and will linger for much of the day.
Cloud will continue throughout the day, although a few brighter spells will develop at times. Outbreaks of light rain and drizzle across Scotland and southern England are expected.
An overcast evening is forecast with cloudy skies and there will be outbreaks of drizzle and light rain across Scotland and southern England which will push northwards.
Overnight will continue cloudy with patches of mist and fog forming.

FOG WARNING IN PLACE
Fog and freezing fog patches are expected to develop quite widely on Thursday night, with some of these becoming dense in places with very poor visibility.
This is most likely to affect parts of central England and east Wales, but other areas are also at risk.
Fog is likely to be slow to clear during Friday and may last through the day in some places which may lead to some travel disruption.
A yellow fog warning has been issued for parts of England and eastern Wales until 12pm Friday.

Friday morning will be grey and cold for many across the country.
There will also be some freezing fog patches for some, appearing most widespread across central England and eastern Wales.

Temperatures will tumble in many areas overnight, especially where skies stay clear, the Met Office warns.
It is already below freezing in parts of Wales and the Midlands and temperatures may fall to -4°C or -5°C in the countryside.
