Who was B.J. Thomas?
Born as Billy Joe Thomas, in 1942 in Hugo, Oklahoma, the singer went on to become a five-time Grammy winner. Over the course of his career, he sold more than 70 million records.
However, it was very difficult to fit Thomas into one particular genre of music. He often blended country, soul, gospel as well as soft rock together. His occasionally wistful songs revolved around love and family.
Before beginning his solo music career, Thomas sang in a church choir as a teenager. He also tried his luck at becoming a member of a musical group. Following his music career, he had joined the musical group ‘The Triumphs’.
During his senior year of college, he also participated in several Battle of the Bands events in the early 1960s.
However, his claim to fame came in 1966, when Thomas and the Triumphs released the album I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry with Pacemaker Records. The album featured a hit cover of the Hank Williams I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.
Following the release of his first album, there was no stopping for Thomas. He went to create memorable songs like Hooked on a Feeling, Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head, I Just Can’t Help Believing, and Rock and Roll Lullaby.
By the late 1970s, the hitmaker turned towards Christianity. He also got sober after years of drug addiction. Hence, then on his subject matter was more religious.
