Teacher argues Band-Aid’s are a symbol of racism in viral video
Back in March 2020, an American teacher posted a video to TikTok in which she claimed that Band-Aid’s were a symbol of racism and white privilege due to their colour.
The original video and account has now been deleted, but copies of it still remain on TikTok and Twitter.
In the footage, she said:
“White privilege. Whose flesh tone is this? I have brown Band-Aid’s in my classroom, I had to special order them, they’re twice as much as these, and they’re hard to find, and they’re frequently out of stock. But when I hand a brown child a white Band-Aid, I am literally adding insult to injury.”
The video got lots of backlash
It’s been months since the original video was posted, and it still continues to receive backlash online.
Whilst some people applauded the teacher for thinking about black rights, many black people came forward and outlined that the point she made was pretty unncessary.
“Hey you can’t accuse her of not being an ally, a teacher went on TikTok about the price of dark Ban-Aid’s compared to dark Band-Aid’s for her students calling it white privilege,” American commentator and writer Reese Waters said on Twitter.
“I mean she’s right but was it really that serious? If I’m bleeding, I just want it to stop. I’ll wear a Band-Aid with Sesame Street characters. If Big Bird stops me from being infected then so be it. Of all the issues we raised last summer, this wasn’t it,” he added.
TikTok user Kory Yeshua also reacted to the video.
Whilst shaking his head, he said: “Lady I don’t know from where thou cometh to where thou goeth, but you need to stand ten miles away from ay child.”
“You are trying to infect their brain with this woke warrior complete and utter garbage. If this is your child’s teacher, I suggest you run. This is past scary. Can anyone say radicalisation. One word of advice, stop,” he added.
