During the recent 3rd ESA Security Conference held in Warsaw, the winning consortium for the implementation of Poland’s National Earth Observation Program CAMILA (Country Awareness Mission in Land Analysis) was announced.
Amongst this winning consortium is Eycore; a space defence startup which recently emerged from stealth. Eycore’s early focus is on development and production of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) payloads and satellites. Eycore’s radar expertise is underpinned by decades of experience, inherited from its founder Dr Maciej Klemm – who also previously cofounded Advanced Protection Systems (APS); a leading Polish defence tech company specialising in anti-drone and ground-based radar technologies.
Commissioned by the Polish Ministry of Development and Technology, the CAMILA constellation marks a significant milestone in the advancement of Poland’s defence and space sectors and reaffirms its readiness to execute complex, integrated projects in support of national interests.
The role of lead integrator in CAMILA was awarded to Creotech Instruments S.A., one of Europe’s prominent players and leading Polish space technology firm, who assembled a consortium of top-tier deep tech companies – each contributing unique capabilities that are critical to the success of the mission.
Driven by experience in building a defence deep-tech company, as well as the fact that space plays an already important role in modern conflict (demonstrated in Ukraine), Eycore was founded with a mission to provide sovereign European space technology for space defence and security.
The company has ambitions of becoming a leading European player in space defence and early on this journey, focuses on advanced SAR payloads designed for outstanding performance and easy integration with a wide range of microsatellite platforms – providing a platform-agnostic solution for radar-based observation from orbit.
“Ukraine has shown that – thanks to a drone and satellite-based technology – a battlefield became almost transparent. It has also shown that SAR satellites developed for commercial markets have problems operating under Russian jamming, and that we cannot rely only on US technologies for our safety. Europe has to step up its defence space capabilities, build sovereign assets and strengthen its industrial base” – said Maciej Klemm, CEO of Eycore.
Eycore’s SAR technology was highly rated by the European Space Agency (ESA) during the CAMILA program’s evaluation process, securing its place within the winning consortium. This endorsement is particularly significant as it reflects on Eycore’s technological maturity whilst positioning the company as a credible and capable partner for providing sovereign Earth observation systems. This achievement further demonstrates the readiness of Poland’s space sector to compete alongside industry leaders globally.
