MIRI/PONTIAN – Symbolising good fortune, the pineapple – or “ong lai” in Hokkien, which means “good fortune has arrived” – is an essential fruit for Chinese New Year celebrations in Malaysia and Singapore.
Pineapple tarts are a popular snack during the festivities, and the fruit is also a common offering at ancestral altars.
